How do I know if a WooCommerce store is actually new?

WooCommerce coverage is patchier than Shopify, so stale records are more common. The checks that separate a real launch from a recent discovery.

Two different things get called new. Newly launched means the store went live recently, a dated event. Newly discovered means software noticed the address recently, which is a fact about the crawler.

The gap between them is wider on WooCommerce than anywhere else, because detection is harder. A WooCommerce store can trade for years before any given crawler recognises it, and the day it does, it enters that tool as new.

Check it yourself

Domain registration date. Public, free, and the strongest single signal. A genuinely new store sits on a recently registered domain.

First SSL certificate. Certificate transparency logs record the first certificate ever issued for a site. For most new stores that lands within days of launch.

The WordPress site around the shop. This one is WooCommerce specific and it is the most reliable tell on the platform. A genuinely new store has a thin site around it. An old site that recently added a shop will have years of posts, pages and an archive. That store is new. The business is not, and for most commercial purposes the business is what you are assessing.

Catalogue and theme. Few products, a theme close to its demo, no customisation.

The distinction WooCommerce forces on you

Shopify mostly gives you one question: is this store new. WooCommerce gives you two, because the shop and the website are separate things. A ten year old consultancy that added a shop last week is a new WooCommerce store on an old business.

Which one you want depends entirely on what you sell. If you sell to new businesses, that record is wrong for you. If you sell ecommerce services, it may be your best lead of the week, because they have revenue already and have just committed to selling online. Either way you should know which you are looking at, and most sources do not tell you.

The yardstick

Take ten records from any source claiming to be new, look up the registration dates, count how many fall inside thirty days. For comparison, FisherLeads publishes an independent audit of 1,000 random records, 98.8% confirmed genuinely newly registered, with the full set downloadable so the audit can be repeated.

How do I know if a WooCommerce store is actually new?

Check the domain registration date, the first SSL certificate, and whether the WordPress site around the shop has years of posts. All three are public.

What is the difference between a new WooCommerce store and a new business?

They are not the same. An established site can add a shop, making the store new but the business old. Which you want depends on what you sell.

Why are stale records more common on WooCommerce?

Detection is harder, so a store can trade for years before a crawler recognises it. The day it does, it enters that tool labelled new.

How accurate are FisherLeads records?

An independent audit of 1,000 random records confirmed 98.8% as genuinely newly registered, with the records published for download.
