What makes a store new on this list

A store appears here on the day its storefront went live and could take an order. That is one of three dates a store carries, and it is the only one that means the store is actually open. Most lists of new Shopify stores are built on one of the other two, which is how a page headed with this month ends up showing stores from last year.

Why the theme column is the strongest signal

Why most lists of new Shopify stores are out of date

Search for a list of new Shopify stores and most of what comes back carries the current month in the title and stores from a year or more ago in the table. This is rarely deliberate. The page was built once, given a heading that templates in the current month, and the table underneath was never rebuilt. The heading updates itself. The data does not.

It matters because the entire value of a new store list is the window it buys you. A store that opened fourteen months ago has already chosen its theme, its apps, its supplier and its agency. It is a normal store, and you are a late cold email. The reason to read a list like this is to arrive before those decisions are made.

Five checks you can run on any list of new stores

• Does it say which date it uses. If a page will not tell you whether new means registered, first seen or opened, assume it is the loosest one.
• Is there a date on every row. A date in the heading with none in the table tells you nothing about any individual store.
• Open three stores from the top. They should load, sell something, and look like they opened recently. If two are parked, the list is not verified.
• Check the oldest row. On a genuine list of new stores the bottom of the page should still be recent.
• Ask what happens after the list. A list you cannot narrow, open by category or get alerts from is a page to read, not a source to work from.

Getting a reply once you have the list

Finding the stores is the easy half. The half that decides your result is whether your message arrives at all, and this is where most outreach off a list like this quietly fails.

A new store owner is receiving more cold email in their first fortnight than at any other point in the life of the business. Filters are unusually aggressive on that kind of mail, and a sender with no reputation behind the domain is the easiest thing in the world to junk. If you send from a brand new domain, or from a free mailbox, or from a domain with no authentication set up, a good share of what you send will not be seen by anybody.

• Send from a real domain with authentication in place. Without it you are arguing with a spam filter you cannot see.
• Open with the store, not with yourself. The theme, the category and the country are in the row. A first line showing you looked at their storefront beats any subject line formula.
• Pitch into the gap, not against an incumbent. A store on an untouched default has not chosen yet. That is a different conversation from a switch.
• Keep the first message short and give an easy no. Owners in opening week answer short, specific, low pressure messages and ignore long ones.
• Work the stream, not the page. A standing alert on your category and country beats checking a list occasionally.
